As a father of three, husband, full-time orthopedic surgeon and workout enthusiast, I understand the importance of having good health. Sick days and low energy levels are not an option for me. That’s exactly why I subscribe to a whole food, plant-based lifestyle and way of eating. As a matter of fact, my wife and daughters eat the same way as well. Throughout all three pregnancies my wife was plant-based eating whole foods. My wife, is a practicing dentist and she also understands the importance of a whole food, plant-based diet and the benefits it can provide to your oral health. On top of this, my entire immediate family eats whole food plant based! My father, well into his 70’s is a former CEO of a large concrete and construction materials company and recognized the benefits of this way of eating and living. He is completely off blood pressure medication, cholesterol medication and he will tell you he feels better eating this way. We choose to eat this way for our health and the environment.
A whole-food, plant-based lifestyle, by definition, is a way of eating that is free of animal products, is unprocessed, and free of added oils. This way of eating has proven its utility and health benefits for many patients who are trying to prevent and reverse heart disease. Not only can you prevent and reverse heart disease, but many other conditions such as type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, morbid obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol can also be reversed. Plant-based, whole foods are the most nutrient rich foods that one can consume and possess many health benefits. Hippocrates once said “Let food be thy medicine” and this is a quote we need to live by as chronic medical conditions in this nation are the byproduct of poor food options.
Chronic and preventable medical conditions account for a great proportion of medical costs in the United States. According to the CDC more than 859,000 Americans die from a heart attack or stroke each year. This costs our nation approximately 199 billion dollars per year in health care costs. These diseases also lead to 130 billion dollars in lost productivity on the job. A whole food plant based way of eating and lifestyle has been proven to prevent and reverse heart disease as documented by Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn.
If a whole food, plant-based way of eating is not appealing to you because of health reasons lets discuss the environmental impacts that plant-based, whole foods can provide. To make 1 gallon of milk takes about 1,000 gallons of water according to the Water Footprint Network. I would argue that water is the most important natural resource on this earth and needs to be protected. Personally, as a father, I would love for my children and future grandchildren to have healthy drinking water for their entire life. This is just one example how our eating habits impact the environment and there are many more to come.
This blog will be no different from any other blog on the internet you will encounter. The purpose is to provide you with beneficial thoughts and information from something that I have found to provide myself and my family with an abundance of health benefits. Throughout this series of posts, we will explore many topics pertaining to health and plant-based eating. What you will not find on this website is me wasting time downplaying others way of eating and lifestyles should they not agree with a whole food, plant-based way of eating. There is more than one way to approach health and nutrition, and obviously whole food, plant-based will not be for all and that is okay, I get it. So please keep comments to this blog constructive. This is to be a forum to help people improve not only their lifespan, but their overall health span. I want to see people living in retirement enjoying themselves free of medical issues due to diabetes, heart disease, and obesity.
